Our Japanese and foreign qualified lawyers have substantial experience acting as counsel and arbitrators before major international commercial arbitration institutions, including the International Chamber of Commerce, the Japan Commercial Arbitration Association, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the London Court of International Arbitration, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.
Our lawyers in Tokyo work seamlessly with arbitration colleagues in our offices in Singapore, Hong Kong, New York, and London, among other locations, to provide comprehensive advice to clients in major arbitration cases around the globe. We also advise clients at the contract drafting stage, including on choosing the most suitable seat of arbitration and arbitral institution. In addition, we assist clients with mediation of their cross-border disputes.
Representative Experience
- Represented a Japanese company in arbitration filed with the Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation & Arbitration Centre (ADCCAC) by an Abu Dhabi subcontractor involving claims arising from a construction project.
- Represented a Japanese mining company in relation to an ICC arbitration concerning a coal mining project in Japan.
- Represented an Australian pharmaceutical company in an ICC arbitration regarding claims by a Japanese foundation.
- Represented a Greek distributor against a Japanese automobile company in JCAA arbitration relating to termination of a distributorship agreement.
- Acted as arbitrator in a JCAA arbitration between a Swiss pharmaceutical company and its Japanese counterpart in a dispute relating to the termination of an exclusive license agreement.
- Acted as co-arbitrator in a JCAA arbitration between two Japanese construction companies regarding a major overseas project.
- Represented a Japanese company in a construction dispute in mediation under the rules of the Singapore International Mediation Centre.
- Represented a client in relation to the recognition and enforcement of an interim arbitral award in a dispute with a Japanese tool manufacturer and retailer.
