Compliance strategies for businesses expanding into Brazil – Countermeasures against increasing risk
With the Rio de Janeiro Olympics coming up, Brazil, with the fifth largest population in the world (about 200 million) and the seventh largest economy in the world (the largest economy in Latin America), is gathering a lot of attention. Especially with Japan since many Japanese companies have been entering into the Brazilian market since the latter half of 2000s, and it’s becoming increasingly important for them to implement an effective local compliance program there. In recent years, Brazilian regulators have announced a policy to strengthen application of compliance related regulations including corruption prevention law adopted in 2014. Moreover, due to the country’s complicated legal structure and tendency to emphasize human relationships, it is getting more important for Japanese companies considering to enter or expand into the Brazilian market to understand the actual situations of compliance risks and practical countermeasures there.
At this seminar, we will invite specialists of corporate crime and compliance in Brazil, and explain the legal structures and practical points to be noted, from internal control to handing of non-compliant actions, focusing on compliance and crisis management that Japanese companies should be aware of when entering into Brazil.
